US Anthrax Vaccine: Immunization Strategies and Public Health Implications

The US anthrax vaccine (BioThrax®) is an FDA-approved vaccine for pre-exposure prophylaxis and post-exposure protection against Bacillus anthracis, the bacterium responsible for anthrax. Administered via intramuscular injection in a multi-dose regimen, the vaccine stimulates immune responses against protective antigen (PA), a key component of the anthrax toxin.

The vaccine is primarily used for military personnel, laboratory workers, and individuals at high risk of exposure, including certain emergency response teams. Post-exposure vaccination combined with antibiotic therapy provides protective immunity in case of bioterrorism incidents. Research focuses on improving vaccine formulations, reducing the number of required doses, and developing recombinant anthrax vaccines with enhanced safety and immunogenicity. Public health strategies rely on preparedness programs, vaccination campaigns, and stockpiling vaccines for rapid deployment during anthrax outbreaks or biosecurity threats.
